My stay at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa was amazing.
You will get an entire stretch of private beach to lay back, relax, and to watch probably the best sunset you’ve ever seen in your entire life.
It was one-of-a-kind experience to stay in its rooms. Travelers wouldn’t associate wooden chalets in this part of the world with luxury, but Meritus pulled it off.
One may have slight discontent about the long walks from his or her room to the lobby, but the tranquility of the hotel’s surrounding made up for it.
My room was clean, and it stayed spotless throughout my stay. It’s all thanks to the meticulous housekeeping staffs who go around the hotel’s compound on rickshaws to carry out their work in a very professional manner. They do it with a smile on their face too!
Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa is a top contender for luxury travelers looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Its calm and serene environment, coupled with access to a private beach that promises majestic sunsets will make you want to stay longer.

Why Should You Trust Me?
I was in Langkawi, and I stayed in one of Meritus’ Pool Terrace Room for 4 days and 3 nights.
Unlike many hotel reviews on the Internet, this detailed review was not paid for, nor sponsored by the hotel. What you are reading is my independent view of the hotel based on my stay.
Instead of being brought on a “press tour”, I explored hotel facilities on my own, took as many photos as I can, requested for basic services, and put forward common questions that any guest might have to its staffs just to evaluate their service.
To help me produce more independent hotel reviews, and to keep this website running, clicking on any links on this page to book a room at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa will earn me a commission from hotel booking websites.
I try to work with as many major hotel booking sites as I can, so you can use your favorite hotel booking website.
Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa sits beside a stretch of Langkawi Island’s busiest beach – Cenang Beach.
Travelers throng to the beach every day to have a dip in the sea, sunbath and to participate in fun water activities. It is not an overstatement to say that Cenang Beach has it all.
The activities here don’t subside even after sunset. Fire shows and makeshift beach bars take over. Some beachgoers will still be dipping in the warm sea water while many will stroll along the beach.
Here comes the best part about staying at Meritus Pelangi – the hotel have a stretch of Cenang Beach to its own.
Not only you will be able to participate in all the activities happening along the popular beach, you will have the option to enjoy the calmer side of it just right outside your room.
The beach offers probably the most magical sunsets in this part of the world. Be back at the hotel to take a swim in the sea or lay by the beach around dawn. Once you have seen the sunset, you will want to see it over and over again. As the hotel is very near the airport, planes departing the island will enhance the view even more.
Apart from the beach, the hotel is also right beside Jalan Pantai Chenang, one of the busiest roads on Langkawi Island with hotels, shops, roadside stalls, restaurants, and cafés dotting both its sides.
The nearest shopping mall, Cenang Mall is reachable within 20 minutes by feet or around 5 minutes by car. Aside from Cenang Beach, the nearest attraction is Underwater World Langkawi. To get there from the hotel, it takes around 25 minutes by feet or around 10 minutes by car.
I’m not going to lie. The wooden exterior of rooms worried me a little as I cruised through the hotel’s compound on a buggy ride.
Most of my stays at hotels using wood as the core element of their interior design didn’t score well when it comes to room condition. The rooms are usually pretty dim, and furniture noticeably aged.
Meritus was different.
As soon as I pushed open the wooden door, I was welcomed with a spacious and brightly-lit room. The interior decoration was simple, but yet, elegant. The pieces of furniture look very new and well-maintained.
Even though the bedroom floor was fully carpeted, the room feels so fresh as if the carpet was newly installed.
One thing worth noting is that the air conditioner always takes a while to cool our room. On several occasions, we even decided to get half-naked while waiting for the air conditioner to do its job.
It wasn’t a big deal for us, but you might be irritated if you are expecting a cool room upon your return from the beach.
Another thing about the room that stood out was its cleanliness.
Tabletops, mirrors and almost every surface in the room were spotless.
It is not an exaggeration to say that when I first stepped into the bathroom, it felt like my feet is the reason why the floor is getting dirty. It was that clean.
As I went out to the balcony, I was expecting a slightly dusty floor, with maybe small patches of sand here and there, brought from the beach by previous guests.
It is a reasonable expectation.
I usually find myself rubbing my feet against the floor mat when I reenter my room from the balcony when I stayed at beach hotels. Heck, now that I thought about it, I actually do this every time I stepped out onto the balconies of AirBnBs and hotels where I stayed.
I didn’t feel the need to do that at all during my stay at Meritus. The cleanliness of the balcony was well taken care of just like the rest of the room.
I stayed in the Pool Terrace Room that occupies the second floor of a double-storey duplex, overlooking a pool.
There is so much green surrounding the pool. Coconut trees, palm trees, and other tropical plants, together with the blue-colored tiles of the swimming pool form a combination of colors that is pleasurable to look at.
Walking out to the balcony was especially delightful in the morning when all you can hear are the chirping of birds.
The “color palette” of my room’s view becomes even more enchanting when you take in all the dark brown duplexes with brown roofs just like yours around the pool.
I don’t have strict preferences when it comes to beds. As long as they are clean, I can sleep well regardless of whether the bed is hard or soft.
The king-sized bed inside my room was huge, and it was very comfortable when I slept on it. It wasn’t too hard or too soft.
My girlfriend did have a minor issue with her pillow because it was too soft for her.
However, it was taken care of pretty quickly because the hotel offers a pillow catalog with up to three types of pillow for you to choose from.
The wardrobe or closet of my room is in the bathroom. This feature stood out to me because it made perfect sense!
Once you are done with your shower, all you need to do is to walk up to the wardrobe, pick up your clothes and put it on.
Why do you want to place your clothes somewhere in the bathroom and risk getting them wet? Remember that time when you had to rush across your air-conditioned room, naked and probably shivering hard because you forgot to bring your clothes into the bathroom?
That will not happen when you stay at Meritus.
The soundproofing in my room was really good. Unless the door to my balcony was open, I rarely hear anything that’s happening outside my room.
When you go outside, there was nothing but calmness with noticeable bird and insect chirps around you. Occasionally, there will be buggies passing by, ferrying guests from their room to the lobby, or vice versa, but the vehicles were pretty quiet.
Wi-Fi / Internet Connection
Throughout my stay at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, the speed of the wireless Internet connection stayed pretty consistent inside my room and across the hotel’s compound.
I wasn’t using the Wi-Fi at the beach because I assumed that connection will be weak or non-existent.
The following is a series of speed tests performed inside my room.
I was able to browse the Internet pretty smoothly, and even watch videos on YouTube without having to wait for them to buffer.
However, I wasn’t able to backup my videos and photos within a reasonable timeframe. The progress bar was moving, but it was much faster for me to upload through my mobile connection. Of course, how other guests are using the Wi-Fi connection could be affecting me too.
Anyway, you shouldn’t face major issues with the connection when all you need to do is to browse the Internet and watch some videos on YouTube or on social media.
Dressed in light-gold traditional Malay costumes, the staffs at Meritus Pelangi always don a smile on their face.
Everywhere you go, the staffs will make sure to pause and greet you, or at least acknowledge your presence with a smile.
Buggy drivers often stop or slow down when they come across guests who are walking within the hotel’s compound just to greet them.
They truly try to make you feel at home.
Not only that, they are always ready to help, even when you didn’t request for it. My interactions with them have nothing short of a series of pleasurable experiences.
On the first night of our stay, I was trying to switch on the television, but one of the batteries for the remote control was missing.
As it was already late, I didn’t bother and went straight to bed. The next day, I called up the front desk and told them about the battery.
In less than 15 minutes, a staff showed up at my room with the battery. He didn’t only insert the battery for me, but he also made sure that the remote control is working before he left.
Throughout our stay, we felt very comfortable approaching the staffs with any questions about the hotel’s facilities and amenities. We were inquiring about the spa at the hotel, and the staff at the reception explained patiently about their services.
One night, we got lost on our way back to our room. Luckily, a staff who was carrying some equipment around the hotel’s compound in his motorized vehicle passed by.
He showed us the way but later decided to “walk” us back to our room. We really appreciated the gesture because the surrounding was quite dark at that time.
All in all, we would like to commend the efforts of the staffs we interacted with during our stay at the hotel.
The hotel offers daily housekeeping service unless you choose not to be disturbed.
It is very hard to be picky about it.
Every time we got back to the room, it looks as if we are checking in for the first time, except for the fact that our belongings are in the room.
Used towels placed on the side of the bathtub were replaced, and amenities were replenished every day.
On the second day, we were staying inside the room when the housekeeping staffs rang the doorbell to carry out her duties. All she needed was around 15 minutes to clean and restore the entire room into its original state. And yes, this includes the bathroom and the balcony.
We were blown away by both the speed and the meticulousness of the housekeeping staff.
Check-in / Check-out
The check-in process was one of the best we have experienced so far in all our hotel stays. Instead of having us stand at the front desk, a staff brought us to a lounge area at the center of their lobby.
They served us with welcome drinks, and the staff went on to explain the hotel’s layout, facilities, and she also answered questions that we had about your stay.
The check-out process was a breeze too. Since we booked our rooms online, all I needed to do was to drop my keys, and I’m ready to leave!
In my opinion, the facilities at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort are adequate.
There are two pool areas for guests staying in different areas within the hotel’s compound.
If you are a gym rat or someone who would like to get some workout done during your vacation, don’t worry. The hotel offers a fitness center.
Within the hotel’s compound, there are also a few poolside bars, beach bars, and restaurants should you decide to spend more time at the hotel instead of venturing out.
You can also pamper yourself with a session of massage at the hotel’s massage kiosk by the beach or by getting a spa session at Pelangi Spa. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to experience either of these, so we won’t be writing about them in this hotel review.
As you arrive at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, a grand building featuring traditional Malay architectural features will first catch your attention.
The building is where the lobby is.
In some ways, the lobby kind of resembles the room that you will be staying in. It is spacious, and brightly-lit with yellow lamps as well as natural light.
The seats in the lobby are very comfortable too. Since it also has a bar that serves alcohol, coffee, water, and juices, it is a space I would gladly use to relax for a couple of hours or to get some work done.
The hotel staffs greeted us with a smile upon our arrival, and that made us felt like we chose the right hotel for our Langkawi trip.
There is a long stretch of beach right beside the hotel’s compound.
Even if you are staying in a room that is furthest away from it, it will only take you a stroll of around 5 to 10 minutes to reach the beach known for its serenity and breathtaking sunset.
During our stay, the hotel was carrying out a beach nourishment project on one part of the beach.
It was quite disappointing at first, but soon, we realized that it didn’t affect us much because of most parts of the beach are still open. We still had a lot of fun taking dips and strolling by the beach.
The beach is only available for hotel guests. As such, it is very quiet in the morning, making it the perfect location to relax.
Take a slow walk along the shoreline, and let the waves gently massages your feet. If you want to get into the water, be prepared to have all the fun because it truly feels like the beach is all yours.
The hotel provides many beach chairs along the beach. You can grab a towel from the towel stations near the pool, and use any of these chairs to relax, sunbath, read, or take a nap.
Hotel staffs are constantly moving around the beach area by foot or with a bicycle, looking to take food or drink orders from guests who are enjoying the beach.
Dawn is when the beach gets a little busy.
As the sun sets, the beach turns into a picturesque scene. You will have to see it yourself to appreciate it. The hotel is very near the airport, so the departure and landing of planes often give this beautiful view extra points.
Cba, Meritus’ own beach bar, offers guests the opportunity to dine on the beach while enjoying the beautiful sunset.
We had our dinner at Cba during one of the evenings when we stayed at Meritus. The food was good, but what made the entire experience amazing was the sunset and the fact that you are dining on probably one of the best beaches in Malaysia.
There are two swimming pools in the hotel’s compound:
- Cascade Pool
- Horizon Pool
Horizon Pool is the bigger pool near the lobby while Cascade Pool is a smaller pool that caters to guests who are staying further away from the lobby.
My girlfriend and I are not avid swimmers, so we did not utilize the pool. However, we did walk around the area quite a lot on our way to the beach.
We noticed that both the pools weren’t that busy at all, even in the evenings. Of course, there are guests swimming, and children having fun at the water playground, but the pool areas were not crowded.
The fact that the pools, especially the Horizon Pool, occupies a large space could be the reason behind it. Having two pools instead of just one go-to pool for guests is also another possible reason.
The pools are also clean and well-maintained. If you are more of a pool person than a beach or sea person, you will still have a good time hanging around Meritus Pelangi’s swimming pools.
Fitness Center / Gym
During our stay, we decided to be lazy and not stick to our workout routine. Nonetheless, we still went to check out the hotel’s fitness center or gym.
The fitness center has almost everything one will need to have a good workout. Available equipment includes treadmills, yoga mats, weight machines, dumbbells, exercise balls and more.
It doesn’t have all the workout machines that you might be familiar with.
I know, because I base my workouts on the Big-Five Workout Program, and I remember I couldn’t spot a couple of the machines I am used to at the fitness center.
You probably wouldn’t mind this. Almost everybody can still get a proper workout done.
Just like how a gym should be, the fitness center at Meritus has a padded floor with proper grip, as well as mirrors on the wall for you to monitor your form.
All the treadmills face the sea, giving runners a beautiful panoramic view of the skyline, beach, and plants around the hotel.
Throughout our stay at Meritus Pelangi for 4 days and 3 nights, we had our breakfast at Spice Market, the hotel’s main restaurant.
Just like many parts of the hotel, Spice Market wasn’t crowded at all, even during peak hours from 8:00 to 10:00am.
The restaurant serves a wide variety of food for its breakfast buffet.
On most days, there were traditional Malay favorites such as nasi lemak and rendang. Roti, fried noodles, baked beans, salad, soups, cereals, fresh fruits and many others are some of the regular food items served there.
There is also an egg station where you can request for eggs to be prepared by different methods. Bacon strips and steaks are waiting at the egg station for you to pick them up too!
The hotel had a section serving Arabic breakfast on one of the mornings. It made my day. Hummus with cheese together with olives and pitas were my favorite. I cannot stop helping myself to more portions of it. It’s that delicious!
I have to say that we enjoyed the breakfasts we had at Spice Market. Just as we thought things are becoming a little repetitive, the hotel surprised us by serving Arabic dishes. Well played, Meritus, well played…
The Final Verdict
If you want to know whether you should book a room at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, my short answer will be ‘yes’.
Even though there might be minor shortcomings as compared to other hotels on the island, Meritus offers a very unique experience of staying inside rooms featuring traditional Malay architectural features.
The calmness around the hotel’s compound makes it perfect for travelers who are seeking solace from the busy city life. You will not want to leave at the end of your stay.
I also truly believe that staffs working at the hotel are trying to satisfy guests to the best of their abilities. Their smiles, patience, and proactiveness were remarkable, and I cannot stop repeating them in this review.
On top of that, the private beach at the hotel makes it all worth it on its own, especially if you are a beach lover. The sunset is to die for, and having your dinner while watching the sunset is a must-do during your stay here.
