Short Verdict

In a nutshell, this hotel is not the place to stay if you want a hotel near popular attractions such as PETRONAS Twin Towers, Petaling Street, Central Market or KL Bird Park.

The hotel’s location is too far away from the city center and any train station. You are probably better off staying in the KLCC area or the Petaling Street area.

However, if you are looking for a spacious room to stay longer, Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur offers that at a very reasonable rate.

The rooms come with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom that is separate from the living room. The separate bedroom is very convenient if you want to host a small group of friends in the living room.

There is nothing to complain about the hotel’s cleanliness and the service level of its staffs.

Why Should You Trust Me?

I am based in Kuala Lumpur for work, and I have been living in this city for more than 10 years.

Once in a while, I choose to stay in a hotel for a staycation or just for a change in environment to boost my productivity. While doing these, I also review the hotels where I am staying at so travelers like you can make an informed decision before booking a place to stay.

I booked and stayed in a Premier Room in Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur for 2 days and 1 night. It was for a staycation, but I also spent a few hours during my stay to write this review.

Unlike many hotel reviews on the Internet, this detailed review is not paid for, nor sponsored by the hotel. It is an independent review based on my stay.

Instead of going on a “press tour”, I explored all the hotel facilities on my own, and I took as many photos as I can. I also requested for basic services and asked common questions that any guest might have to evaluate the hotel’s service.

Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur is in a part of the city where most foreign embassies are. Unless a visit to one of these embassies is on your itinerary, the location of the hotel is not the best for a sightseeing trip.

It is too far away from the city center for a traveler. On top of that, there is no train station nearby. You can either get the reception to hail a cab for you, use the free shuttle service provided by the hotel, or hail a ride yourself using an app like GRAB to get to the city center.

There is a 7-Eleven right across the street from the hotel, but other than that, you don’t have many choices for restaurants within a 5-minute walking distance from the hotel.

Room Condition

I booked the Premier Room expecting it to be spacious, and it did not disappoint. Every space in the room was overdelivering on this expectation of mine.

Getting into the room, I was first greeted by a living room with ample space. The kitchenette with a sink and a large countertop was to my left.

The bedroom is behind a door, and it is as spacious as the living room. Spaciousness is the only word that I can use to describe the bathroom too, even there is a bathtub in there.

The room has a simple and modern interior design, which is the type of room design I like. A design like that complements the warm mood that yellow lightbulbs in the room were creating.

The housekeeping team at the hotel did a great job cleaning up my room before I checked in.

Although the room is big, I couldn’t find a dirty or dusty spot. And yes, I even checked the racks in the shelves and wardrobes.

I felt comfortable walking around the room without slippers. My feet were not gathering dirt or dust. The smart use of carpets in the living room and the usage of different tiles across different areas of the room probably helped, but I’m sure the housekeeping staff played a big part too.

There is not much to see from my room. I could see the street in front of the hotel and the building right across.

Looking downwards, I can imagine how the view will be nicer if the pool wasn’t going through a renovation.

The room which I was staying in is a suite instead. And that means the bedroom is separated from the living room and kitchenette with a door.

Bedside lamps are adjustable if you want to do some late-night reading or phone browsing. There is also a television in the room if you are someone who loves watching TV programs from your bed.

I don’t recall seeing a vanity table around, so you’ll need to do all your makeup in the bathroom. A small work desk took the place of the vanity table in the bedroom. Such a setup is perfect for someone like me who don’t do makeup and was trying to get some work done.

The king-sized bed in the bedroom was tidy and clean when I first saw it. As I lay my bed on it for the first time, I can feel how smooth the sheets are and how soft the mattress is.

The pillows are too soft to my liking, though. I stacked two pillows together, but doing so wasn’t enough to lift and hold my head in a sleeping position that I’m used to.

The bathroom is big. It comes with a shower and bathtub that are separate from each other.

Like the room, I love how spacious the bathroom is. However, I think making the shower area bigger could be a better use of the space.

I am not claustrophobic, and I have an average build, so no problem for me. But I can imagine someone who has a larger build than myself struggling to move around in the shower without hitting himself against the wall.

Room Amenities

Since the room is more of a suite, amenities provided are more than what you would expect.

Here’s a list of what was available in the living room and kitchenette:

  • Television
  • 3-seater sofa set
  • Microwave oven
  • Fridge
  • Sink
  • Coffee and tea

In the bedroom and bathroom, you will find:

  • Bathrobes
  • Slippers
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Safe
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shower cap
  • Vanity pack with cotton buds/swabs
  • Body lotion
  • Shower gel
  • Hair shampoo
  • Hair conditioner
  • Towels

Sink and Bathroom Amenities Provided by Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur

I might have missed a thing or two, but the amenities are pretty adequate.

To try out the room service, I called housekeeping to request for a hairdryer on the second day of my stay. It took about 20 minutes to arrive.

The hairdryer sounded scarily loud when I chose the highest speed setting, so I only used it at a low speed. I’m sure I can get it replaced if I don’t mind waiting an hour more or so, but I didn’t bother since my hair will be dry by then.

Noise Levels

During my stay, I only heard noise coming from the corridor once. It was from soft chatter by other guests passing by the corridor outside my room. I was watching TV in the living room at that time, so it didn’t bother me.

The bedroom is far away from the corridor and it is separated by the bathroom and living room. You can be sure that the noise coming from the corridor will not interrupt your sleep.

Besides, thanks to the fact that the hotel is on a quiet street away from the city center, there is not much noise coming from the outside either.

The pool, which I could see from my room was covered and undergoing renovation. No construction work was carried out during my stay, so I don’t know how loud it can get when the works are taking place.

Wi-Fi / Internet Connection

During check-in, the hotel staff at the reception will show you how to get connected to the hotel’s WiFi.

I already have a local data plan on my phone, so I was using it instead of the hotel’s WiFi.

Overall, I’ve had pleasant experiences interacting with different hotel staffs.

They are presentable. Most of them serve with a smile, and more importantly, they attended to all my requests promptly.

When I was checking in, a guest was asking for help to get a taxi booked. There seemed to be some miscommunication, and I could see that the front desk personnel was very frustrated attending to the guest.

I felt he could have been more patient and try another approach to communicate with the guests.

Good – that’s the word I would use to describe the level of service that I received.

Do not expect the hotel staffs to greet you or smile at you by default. They simply don’t do it unless they have to “deal” with you.

During my stay, I had a few requests and all of them were fulfilled promptly.

Check-in / Check-out

I stayed in a queue for about 20 minutes when I was trying to check-in.

Reception Desk at the Lobby of Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur

There was two personnel at the front desk. One of them was dealing with a guest who had a lot of questions while checking in. The other guy is the one who was frustrated with a guest’s transportation request.

When it was my turn, I presented my ID and filled a form with my contact details. In less than 10 minutes, I was in my room.

The check-out process was a breeze for me too. All I needed to do is to return the key cards, mention my room number, and I’m free to go.

Since I only stayed for one day, I didn’t have the chance to see the outcome of the hotel’s daily housekeeping or room cleaning.

However, I did request a hairdryer on the second day of my stay. The man on the phone understood my request, and it took around 20 minutes for the hairdryer to reach my doorstep.

The person who delivered it also made sure I tested it out before he left.

Room Service

After some work in the late evening, I decided to order room service.

The in-room dining menu offers a nice spread of Malaysian dishes and Western cuisines. I was full from dinner, so I only got myself 2 pints of beer.

The menu didn’t mention whether the beer will come in a can or a bottle, so I wanted to ask when I called room service up.

A lady picked up, and she didn’t get my question at all. After speaking to a colleague of hers in the background, she decided to answer “Yes, it will come in a can.”

After around 20 minutes, I got two pints of beer. And no, they didn’t come in cans. I got two glasses of warm beer instead, and I had to put them into the fridge for a while before drinking.

When it comes to facilities, Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur offers everything that you would expect from a 4-star hotel.

There is a fitness center, meeting rooms, a self-service launderette, and it stores luggage for guests. The hotel also provides a scheduled free shuttle service to major shopping malls in the city center.

Although these facilities will be useful for some guests, they are nothing to shout about.

Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur's SignageAs you walk up a small flight of stairs after getting dropped off at the entrance, you should see the lobby and front desk right away.

The lobby is simple, airy and spacious. It just doesn’t have enough seats for guests who are waiting.

Swimming Pool

The swimming pool area was under renovation during my stay.

At the reception, there was a notice informing guests about the pool at another property nearby. The hotel will provide transportation for any guest who would like to go for a swim.

It was a nice gesture from the hotel, but it was too inconvenient for me to try it out, so I didn’t.

TrEat Restaurant & Bar at Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur

Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur has an on-site restaurant called TrEat Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant is where you’ll be having your free breakfast buffet.

The restaurant was quite packed at around 9:00am when I got there. Looking around, I could find a variety of food that’s wide enough to satisfy many different tastebuds.

From pastries, salads and salami slices to omelets, noodles and nasi lemak (fragrant rice with curry chicken in Malay), you should be able to find something for yourself. More of cereal or a fruits for breakfast kind of a person? They have a dedicated section for those too.

Croissant Station at the Breakfast Buffet Offered by TrEat Restaurant & Bar at Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur

The taste of the food is average. I had a bit of everything, but nothing enticed me enough to go for a second round.

The Final Verdict

Oakwood Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur is not the hotel for you if you are in Kuala Lumpur for a sightseeing trip. It will be very inconvenient, especially during rush hours.

I love the spaciousness of the room and the bathroom. It will be a comfortable place to stay for locals looking to have a staycation or business travelers wanting to stay for an extended period. However, if I were to do either of these, I will try getting the hotel to provide slightly harder pillows.

The amenities provided in the rooms are also more than adequate to support an extended stay, but everything else about the hotel is just slightly above average. There are many better 4-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur if spaciousness is not a thing that you desperately need.
